This is probably the last one of these for a while.
Milestone was begun in 1993 by a group of African American creators who felt that minorities were underrepresented in comics. DC was unique, inasmuch as it sponsored this imprint without absorbing it (initially) into the DC universe.
You can read about the many Milestone titles at the link above. My personal favorite was Icon, a riff on the Superman story, in which an alien lands on a plantation and takes the form of the slaves he meets there.
Icon ages in a discriminatory society. He stops aging at adulthood, and assumes the identity of his sons. He uses his power to do charitable acts, until he is discovered by Rocket, who becomes his sidekick/partner.
Generational issues are dealt with in Icon, as well as issues of race. Many of the heroes Icon encounters feel that he has been whitewashed because of his professional status in his secret identity. Rocket and Icon clash over ideology.
Another bold move is that Rocket is pregnant, and the issues deal with teen pregnancy.
Icon is good, solid work. Check it out.
