Arm is indeed broken. Tomorrow we’re off to the bone doc to talk pins and casts. Guess we’ll really see if I can write a novel with an arm tied behind my back. Jury is still out for software. The college moves slowly. I seem to be able to use my right hand, sling off, propped on a table, but I will consult with surgeon about whether it is safe and prudent to do so. Another friend suggested hiring staff. Hmmm…

Meanwhile, here are a couple of links for you.

First, Julie Rose posts a soundtrack for Susan Higginbotham.

Next, David Bridger hosts an interview with Suzanne McCleod about critiquing.

The new drugs are better for pain. My arm still hurts, but I care less. :P Sleepy, though.

Might I suggest a voice recognition program? I haven't used any for a while, but I used Dragon Naturally Speaking about eight years ago and it was awesome. You need a good microphone and a couple of days to train it, but after that, it's hands-free writing.

I've been considering installing it again at home for my writing.

And when I say good microphone, ideal is a good one with an externally-powered filter attached. Many people get frustrated because their setup isn't good, but once you have a good, filtered microphone, the results can be extraordinary.

I would like this. I'm waiting to see what the college will do for me before I think about buying on my own. It does seem like a good solution.

Even if you do have to buy it yourself, it would probably be a good investment long-term. Less typing means less chance of developing carpal tunnel syndrome (a real problem for folks who spend lots of time working on computers - like writers).

Someone who uses an older version of Naturally Speaking warned me I'd need to buy a decent quality mic, but the one I received in the Version 9 package is great. The only background noise that gets through is my budgie, who throws a hissy fit occasionally and gives me a line of

it itch it ti ti atch itch it it!

across the screen. :D

OUCH!
Yuck!
Don't you dare try to write and end up damaging yourself for good. That's an order! :-)

I promise not to do anything damaging. I'm desperate to write, but I won't hurt myself to do it.

Yes, I'm following orders. :)

I'm sorry to hear the arm is indeed broken. Here's hoping surgery and pins are not necessary!
